Welcome to Reed College's Course Auditor application. This application is intended for members of the broader Reed community who have already graduated from high school and would like to enroll in a single course during the upcoming semester. It is not intended for use by currently enrolled Reed undergraduate students or by participants in Reed's Young Scholars program. Currently enrolled Reed undergraduates interested in auditing a course are encouraged to speak with the Office of the Registrar.

Applications for Spring 2025 must be submitted no later than January 20th 2025, 11:59pm.

Community Member & Reed Alumni Information and Guidance:

Non-degree seeking course auditors are limited to one course per semester at a cost of $100 per course (waived for full-time faculty, staff members, and the spouses or domestic partners of full-time faculty and staff members), plus any additional course fees.
The ability to audit a course is available only at the instructor’s discretion (with their written approval) and on a space available basis and may be revoked at any time. For these reasons, approval of your application to audit is not a guarantee that you will be permitted to register for the course of your choice or continue in the course once registered.
Certain courses at Reed are not eligible to audit. These include—but are not limited to—physical education (PE) courses, independent study, HUM 110, and thesis. Auditing MALS courses is restricted to MALS alumni.
Auditors are not full-time students.
Identification Policy: All course auditors are required to present a valid government-issued ID to the Office of Admission prior to enrolling for a class.
COVID-19 Policy: All course auditors are required to show proof of having received at least one bivalent COVID-19 vaccine to the Office of Admission prior to enrolling for a class.

MALS Graduate Auditor Application

MALS Course Auditing Information and Instructions

Only graduates from Reed's Master of Arts in Liberal Studies (MALS) program are permitted to audit MALS courses. Community members wishing to enroll in a MALS course must be approved to apply as a Special Student and should contact the MALS program at mals@reed.edu.
Auditors are expected to complete all readings and attend class regularly, but written assignments will not be evaluated.
MALS alumni auditors are limited to no more than one course in any academic year. Audited courses are not recorded on a college transcript.
The fee for auditing is $100 per course.
The completed application must be submitted no later than 30 days prior to the start of class.
The applicant will be contacted by the MALS director with next steps upon successful completion of the application.
The MALS director will contact the professor for permission, and will consider the auditor's statement of interest, instructor approval, and space availability in making a final decision.
Approved auditors will be required to submit proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
When applicable, course auditors will be provided with access to electronic course materials such as Moodle, library reserves, etc.

Audited courses carry no academic credit and are not recorded on a Reed College transcript. As such, they are not transferable to another institution.
Expectations for participation vary by course. Upon approval of your application, course auditors will receive direction about consulting with the relevant instructor regarding course requirements and expectations for participation.
Course auditors do not have access to student, campus, or community services. Examples include—but are not limited to—clubs, organizations, residence halls, events, medical resources, the dining hall, student spaces, affinity groups, financial services, student budgets, recreational facilities, athletic teams, or any other campus or student service.
Course auditors are subject to all of Reed College’s policies, including the Honor Principle, and Reed College may dismiss a course auditor from attending a Reed class at any time.
